Steppin It Up

s

On Feb 1st we had our "year end" meeting. This is when all the store managers, district manager, office high up personnel and maintenance guys meet to discuss the previous years performance and goals for the up coming year. Typically we get year end awards at the annual BK Christmas party, but since that was canceled we got them at this meeting.
There were 6 awards. One store got 2-- penny pinchers and food cost, one store got longest amount of time accident free, one store got community builder award, one store got something and WE WON "STEPPIN IT UP"!! Which basically means most improved I believe.

Afterwards we were treated to an overpriced restaurant who AS USUAL messed up my order but I dealt with it. I even had a casual convo with the owner as he, his wife and the corporate big wig sat right across from me :-0 The food was prettier than it actually tasted. But this is FINE dining so it may be a tad to fancy for my picky lil taste buds. And for the record I had NO clue I was in the running for an award... but I did have on my lucky skirt thanks to my amazing sister Missy for buying me it :-D Once again it has proven lucky :-)

Cherished Letter

Background Info: 2001-2002 School Year:
I had FINALLY got my parents to allow me to leave the insane asylum (aka Lynchburg Christian Academy) and attend the local public school, with the agreement they wouldn't help fund my college (I would have had a 4yr scholarship if I did 9-12 grade at the Asylum). So school started... I had 6 classes-5th period directly after lunch was Computer Applications Class with Mr. Anthony Cardoza, lovingly shortened to "Cardoza".
I had a goal for my 11th and 12th grade years--- be a loner, avoid socialization, go to school, go to work, sleep 6 hours repeat... I was working 50 hrs a week at Pizza Hut most weeks as well.
In Computer Apps we were placed in alphabetical order, in 4 rows... Then we were lab partenered up with the person beside us (which would not be the person right before us alphabetically--- that person would have been behind us not beside us) I got partnered with this annoying kid who talked too much. He was yammering all the time and he was lucky to get one "hi" a day out of me. It worked for the first two month. My Grandma died that October, her funeral was on my 17th birthday. After returning to school I finally gave in and had a convo with the talker as it was obvious he wasn't gunna stop talking. We bacame best friends. Thus we like to think of it as "Cardoza set us up". We would always skip lunch and go to Cardoza's class early, so instead of the typical about an hour class, we were in there for 1.5 hrs.
Long story short, Marko and I started dating that summer. Skip to fall 2004, we visited Cardoza (I had already graduated- and we had started our crazy working careers and family) we were about to be married and were preggo. Afterwards life got busy and he hadn't seen Cardoza since. But when we were debating baby names for our son we disagreed on EVERYthing so hubs finally said "Let's name him Anthony after Cardoza since he started all of this!" And there is the story...--
Anyhow last year I wrote him a letter (annual card type deal everyone send out ya know-- like a Christmas card). I figured it never reached him, or else there was another Anthony Cardoza so it reached the wrong person. It's been MONTHS since then. I got the mail Wednesday and was SPEECHLESS to see a return address label with his name and what I thought to be his address!!

The Letter:

In it he apologized for taking so long to reply. He responded to our update and gave us an update on him career wise. His wife also included a small hand written letter in which she thanked us for reaching out and writing, and included a brief update on their fam (they have two kiddos). And they included a VERY cherished Christmas family picture!!!

Post letter:
It is unlikely I will write again other than our annual Christmas letter/card... it seems too weird to send that out now, so I guess Next year! I don't wanna seem like crazy stalker former student! I was SOOOO excited I quickly called for our Anthony and said "LOOK! At this picture Ant! See him? He used to teach Mommy and Daddy computers and his name is Anthony too. You were named after him, like Jayna was named after Daddy and my gramma"... so being a cute 6 year old he replys "He taught Daddy computers?" (I was trying to explain it on a 6y/o level) I say "Yup!" and he replys " He taught daddy how to download games?" So I leave it at "yeah kinda".

Bubba's

The first time Marko took me to Danville was the Summer of 2005 right after I became the RGM at my current Burger King as we had a district meeting there. Marko had spent several growing up years in Danville. He took me to his favorite ice cream place: BUBBA'S, where they had all sorts of home made ice cream treats and more.It may not look like much, but most important beyond the yumminess is the memories Marko and I would share every month when he would take me to Danville so I wouldn't get lost :-)
He took me to North Carolina that June, my first ever visit. Clueless wifie didn't know a mere 10 minutes from Danville was Reidsville, NC.
During one ride, debris from a tractor trailor cracked my car's windshield.
On another ride ON A COOOOLD wet winter eve Marko got my brother's truck stuck in a muddy ditch when a car ran him off the road and after HOURS of waiting, and 2 failed tow truck attempts he finally got unstuck and picked me up 3 hours late.
Another time he took me to his favorite vacotion spot, Bug's Island. It may not look like much either but it is those good child hood memories we had that we want to pass on to our children!
Now a days hubs has work and a schedule that doesn't cater to my Danville trips and I have learned my way to the 3 BKs in Danville-- or at least my GPS has so I go alone.
Last Monday 1/17 I went to Danville- wasting 3 hours of drive time for a 50 minute meeting basically about NOTHING so I rewarded my "hard work" and "efforts" with BUBBAA'S!
I couldn't decide what to get so I got a peach milkshake and a small cup of chocolate ice cream- because everyone KNOWS you MUST have their chocolate ice cream, it will never lead you astray!
And just to tease the Hubby <3 mmmm mmmm goooood!

Bargains for Beth

I am no am amazing couponing mom. I did it successfully 2 summers ago, but it doesn't mend well when you work as many hours as I do, without a set schedule. However I get super excited when I find super swell deals. I am the SAME mom ho returned 50cent bottles of elmers glue and pencils when I found them for 10 cents at Walgreens during back to school shopping time. I can be silly, and a tight wad at times. All in all I love a good bargain any time I can find one.

The week before Marko was hospitalized- that Thursday (the 6th?) I noticed Walmart was starting to really mark down their clothes. So I knew I would need to check back soon- then the whole hospital stuff happened that weekend so I didn't have time to return to Walmart until the following weekend (Saturday the 15th) but boy oh boy lookie here what I got! I spent $72 and some change, then realized they over charged me for one of J's tshirts so got a $6.30 refund, bought $6 woth of sodas, $3 worth of Qtips and $6 worth of pudding so that made my clothing total was $50.70 for 81 pieced of clothing. Everything you see in this picture was $1 a piece except a pair of uniform pants not shown for $3 and a nice jacket Jayna wore immediately for $3. But I got 81 articles of clothing for $50!! YES you read that correctly. Some of the $1 clothing was 2 and 3 piece sets! My BIG deal was $15.50 Wrangler shorts for Tony for only $1!!
The kids summer clothes shopping seems to be DONE! Go Beth just $25/kid ... well I will get them each a pair of sandals/flip flops later.

Marko's Hospital Stay 1/7-1/10/11

Hubs has/had been sick mostly non-stop since 12/22/10. He's stubborn and figured he was "fine" and would be fine with time. It was getting pretty rough by Friday. When I left for work at 11am he was in the bed sitting up moaning in his 1/2 sleep state every so often in pain- kinda crampy and nausea.

When I got home he wasn't really any better or worse. At 11pm it got worse, as he was throwing up blood. My lil bro couldn't come watch the kids so we woke them and took them to my moms. Hubs wanted me to "just stay home with the kids. I'm fine I can go to the hospital alone"... ummm NO! So we took the kids to my moms and got to the hospital a little before 11:30pm. Luckily thanks to the snow flurries the ER was basically dead empty! We had our own room before 12. In fact I was pleasantly suprised but the relative speediness of the ER staff and friendliness. I had heard my share of horror stories about our local ER and since I had only ever been there twice and ages ago I tended to believe what I had heard. Infact we joked on the way to the ER... you know they are just gonna give you a prescription for 10 loratab, tell you you have a virus and will be fine in a week and charge you $10,000 for their signature on that prescription.

Nurse Sheila and Tech Tiffany took care of Hubs in the ER. Hubs quickly got a heart monitor, pulse reader thing, blood pressure cuff, and IV, blood samples and all that funness.

He was wheeled off to XRays. All w/i the first 30 minutes. Then we had a "lovely" time with the registration nurse when we learned apparently someone (We assume one of Marko's brothers) had used/been using his SS# with a different address and name. In fact she asked him 10x in 4 minutes what his ss# and other info was, then she came back an additional 4x throughout our evening/morning in the ER to reask the same stuff--- like he was going to change his SS# sometime during the night!
They gave hubs 8mg morphine to get the moaning to stop--- it only 1/2 way worked. We did get some nightly entertainment thanks to the crazy lady next door hollaring and yelling about her x bf trying to kidnap her every month for her $1200 check and I swear calling EVERYONE she knew to tell them the story and how the security guard watching her was going to steal her purse because she had $5 in it and how the handcuffs were hurting her and the list of complaints goes on.... umm yeah about 6am she was admitted to the psych ward.
We realized about 2:30 there was something more wrong with hubs when they told him he needed a CAT scan and gave him 2liters of dye to drink. The lady who gave him it forgot to mention to drink it slllooowwwlllyyy so he chugged the first bottle and was in even more pain so 8mg more morphine.

About 5am Nurse Ann took him for his cat scan. About 6am we finally see the dr for the 1st time since midnight and he tells us hubs has a obstructed bowel and will need admitted. We saw the admission Dr. Roberts. We were wheeled over to admittance bay from ER bay.
Just prior to 7am we got our room. The admittance nurses showed us where they were building the new pediatrics unit on floor 2 just down the hall from our room N244.

Sleep was still impossible for me due to the every 10 minute dr visits/nurse visits.

Our nurses for the 1st 12 hours were Melanie and Ella. Ella was very personable--- guess that comes with the grounds of working there for 28 years! We met two Drs.... Richardson- not to be confused with Roberts and Dr. Tate Woodrow who was awesome! Not to mention one of hubs clients does all the phone/pager services for the hospital so we enjoyed some jokes.
Hubs had an endoscopy and biopsy around noon.

He was OUT OF IT. It was scary when he returned to the room, was imobile and was having difficulty breathing (and he was already hooked up to oxygen) so they increased his oxygen levels.

I snuck a call to his mom-- against his will because he didn't want her to worry-- but I felt she should know. He slowly started to come around 7pm...

and low and behold MOMMA showed up unannounced :-0.... Yeah hubs was annoyed with me for calling her! Our 7pm-7am nurses were Jessica and Mary. Jessica has a great sense of humor.

Sunday morning they FINALLY allowed him food--- he was on a liquid diet all Saturday. It was amusing "Chubs" as I frequently lovingly call him was brought TWO trays of food--- hahha they messed up on his diet restrictions so he had a "liquid" breakfast tray and then a Lactose free reg food tray.

FINALLY about noon we FINALLY saw the doctor again-- we hadn't seen him since the previous day around 11am and were getting anxious about his endoscopy results. With meds his obstructed bowel was becoming less painful and would be "self corrected" by the meds. We got his results. He had a torn esophagus, "significant and serious" burning in his stomach lining and esophagus and was diagnosed with severe GERD. He was prescribed prilosec twice a day for 1 week and then one pill daily forever.

We were released at 3pm on Sunday. Nurse Melanie came to remove his IV and hubs said "If I take this out myself can I get a discount" HAHA... you wish hubs!

He was put on quite the restrictive diet: No dairy, No spicy, No tomato, No citrus, No un-needed acids, No peppermint and limited fried foods.... and so you ask what did hubs ask for when we left the hospital? YES that's correct KFC's new hot wings. WHAAAT!?
His gross looking lunch--- broth and chickensalad sandwich- gag!
This is how a bored wifey passes her time... Every good and wise soul knows every room should have pig decor... And every hospital should know not to leave bored visitors unsupervised with dry erase markers :-)

POST HOSPITAL: Hubs has remained low on energy but when he obeys and takes meds as directed and eats smart he feels mostly ok. Well I mean that is until we add up all these medical bills and no insurance---- he then has informed me he will need a heart specialist for his after heart attack care!

I was not allowed to take pictures of him--- and I did good the first 12 hours.... then the temptation got worse... and so I god him knocked out--- and snuck a few others. And I am DEF not allowed to post any pictures, but again my obediance is not top notch.... so I waited 10 days and the need to post is getting stronger...
Oh yeah thanks for all the well wishes, thoughts, prayers--- and Chick Fil A (Wendy :-)

The Slacker's Goal

So I have a goal for 2011, I stole from an online friend.... and I think I can do this! I would love to blog everyday, as I love to write but that is nearly as impossible for me as it comes. I work about 50 hours a week, the kids have extra curricular activities, and I get frustrated when I start falling behind. So my goal is merely twice a month! Being my year started with all bangs, I am slightly delayed, but that's my typical procrastinating life!
New years is merely another day on the calendar in my life, so I happily worked as closer on Eve and opener on Day. After work I did get to go to my mother in law's home in Roanoke, VA and spend time with Marko's side of the family. Unfortunately hubs was not feeling great (and hadn't been feeling good since 12/22/10) and had a client he feared was going to have technical issues so he did not go. I must admit it was odd to participate in a family event for HIS family without him here. Momma cooked a big meal. She had lots of family over- and invited even more who for one reason or another were unable to attend. John, Maurice, a friend named Aaron, Aunt Helen and Uncle Bernard (who I have only seen about 4x in my 8.5 yrs in this fam), Aunt Dee (although she was under the weather and only came after a visit to the hospital) and Aunt Carolyn were all there. My picky son was his typical self- even with food I knew he liked. It only took him 90 minutes to eat that little bit. We stayed from 2-8pm.

I worked the 2nd and 3rd as I had a manager out with double pnemonia and another manager on LOA as he got a new job and we are now just his part time job. LUCKILY after 10plus days out Chuck retuned on Wed the 3rd- but go figure I had gotten crappy feeling so I took a "sick day.

But it was only fair since it was my first day off since Christmas. I still felt week that Thursday but was back to work and by Friday I felt just fine.
One of my employees, Alisa had a beautiful baby girl, Jayla Kay-Ann on Jan 6, 2011 at 9:11am weighing in at 8lbs 1 oz and 20.5"long. I visited her that night, lil beauty!

Unfortunately hubs was getting sicker and was starting to be in some obvious pain, nausea the whole works. He had been mostly sick nonstop since 12/22 remember.
....
To be continued on blog part 2, day 1 so the 6 y/o can get on this computer and stop whining :-)
